Tech2Promotions Background
The important business opportunity as identified globally has been the conversion of biomass into bio-energy, bio-fuels and other value added products. Most of the available biomass resources of India so far have been used for catering to the rural energy needs. Utilization of Indian biomass is still largely an unexplored territory, which could offer excellent business & research opportunities.
With a view to disseminate information on the new business opportunities in bio-processes & Bio-Products, as also to support the prospective entrepreneurs in making the right linkages with the technology providers, CII & TIFAC had jointly organized an interactive Seminar Series on “New Technology Business Opportunities in Bio-Processes & Bio-Products across Five different cities (Chennai, Koochi, Pune, Kolkata & Ahmedabad) in the country. The seminars were a great success, which attracted industry members from the sectors of importance. In these seminars several technology offers received from the Academic institutes & national labs for their transfer, scale-up & demonstration by the Industries.
The following projects has been supported under Bioprocess & Bioproducts Programme of TIFAC, which were generated in the interactive meets: -
- Enzymatic Bioconversions of racemic molecules to obtain stereospecific active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) & other chemicals with M/s Hi-tech Bio Sciences Ltd., Pune
- Development of pharmaceutical grade chitosan & value-added formulations thereof with India Sea Foods, Cochin and technology support from ATIRA
- Process development & optimization for alkali stable cellulase from alkalo-thermophilic Thermomonospora sp with NCL, Pune
Based on the aforesaid response CII and TIFAC are jointly organizing an interactive Seminar Series (II Phase) on 'New Technology Business Opportunities in Bio-Processes & Bio-Products' across Six different cities in the country.
TIFAC-CII seminar series will give the information regarding the new business opportunities in bio-processes & bio-products, and it will help entrepreneurs in making the right linkages with the technology providers. The seminar shall also help the entrepreneurs in networking with TIFAC to access technology funding scheme offered by TIFAC.
Objectives
- To sensitize the industries on new technology trends/developments in bio-processes & bio-products including biomass based energy generation technologies
- To generate novel projects in partnership with the industries for technology development & demonstration with knowledge support offered by national labs/academic institutions from India and abroad
- To develop technologies to execution stage at the national labs / academic institution with a view to make them industry ready for their transfer
Target
Symposium is targeted to reach out to Indian Industries especially small & medium-scale enterprises for improving their awareness and exploring the technology transfer possibilities.

Technology Offers
Biodegradable 2T oil
Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun has developed biodegradable non-edible vegetable oil based 2-stroke Engine oil that offers better or similar performance as petroleum or synthetic oil based products. This agricultural-based 2-stroke engine oil will be less expensive than petroleum or synthetic oils and offers significant benefits to environment and to the end users.......
Biodegradable Metal Working Fluid (soluble cutting oil)
Metal working fluids are important to engineering industry. Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun has developed non-edible vegetable oil based fully biodegradable metalworking fluids that offers same or even better performance as petroleum oil based products. This metal working fluid from renewable will be less expensive than petroleum oils and offers significant benefits to environment and to end-users.
Eco-friendly sprayable girth gear lubricant for cement industry
The Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun has developed eco-friendly, biodegradable & sprayable girth gear lubricant for cement plant. The performance of this product is better than the existing commercial product. The existing lubricants are mineral oil based and non-biodegradable.
Debittered and antioxidant rich pomegranate juice
Pomegranate juice is rich in antioxidant and vitamin C as compared to the same amount of apple juice which contributes for its free radical scavenging and anti ageing activities. It is used in folk medicine (to treat inflammation, sore throats, and rheumatism) for centuries in India.
IIT- Kharagpur has developed a technology which can take care of the bitterness as well as the excess tannin content of the juice, which has health hazards. Because of this technology the time of processing is fast and can be completed within 3-4 hours, no hazardous by-products are formed during the processing of the juice and also process is less labor intensive and further automation is possible.
Enzymatic Polishing of Brown Rice
Rice is the unique food grain sustaining two-thirds of the world’s population. Ironically in countries where rice is the principal food, the preference is generally for well-milled rice, which is lower in nutrient because the proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals, concentrated in the germ and outer layers of the starchy endosperm, are removed as bran during whitening or milling operation. On the other hand, brown rice contains more nutritional components. But brown rice has lost its appeal due to its Nutty taste, undesirable colour, longer cooking time, poor storability. To do away with the loss incurred during mechanical milling and to resolve the problems associated with brown rice, IIT Kharagpur has developed an alternative polishing method to bio-polish the rice with some selected multienzymes having the catalytic properties to degrade the bran layer of rice. Advantage of enzymatically polished rice are, mechanical damage to rice kernel can be avoided, Parboiling process can be skipped, Nutrient loss or weight loss can be avoided, selective bio-polishing has helped to retain the mineral with minor losses in Magnesium, Iron and Zinc, while Calcium content increased by 10%, And also it will need less cooking time, it is very easier for digestion.
Enzymatic Processing of Leather
Environmental pollution caused by different effluents generated during the processing / manufacturing of leather is one of the serious problems the country is facing today. To avoid this problem IIT Kharagpur has developed a technology enzymatic processing of leather. The main advantages of these technologies are this process is Eco-friendly; residual biomass after enzyme extraction can be used for biofuel production. And also this technology give hair recovery from goat & sheep skin it will help to avoid the time loss and the quality of leather is better than the existing one.
Industrial Enzymes
The industrial enzyme sector in India is growing fast for meeting the need of pharmaceutical, food processing, and leather, detergents, pulp & paper and textile industries.
Following two enzymes offer potential economic and strategic benefits.
- Xylanase
- Phytase
Xylanase for paper and pulp industry
Regional Research Laboratory (RRL), Thiruvananthapuram has developed a hyper productive bacterial endoxylanase belonging to the family of F11 and its enzyme characteristics proved that it could be useful for paper pulp processing both in pulp refining process and for eco-friendly biobleaching process of paper pulp. The enzyme is cellulase-free.
Phytase for feed industry
Regional Research Laboratory (RRL), Thiruvananthapuram has developed a fungal strain of GRAS (generally regarded as safe) status for the production of phytase and its enzyme characteristics proved that it could be useful for feed supplementation.
